The animation is extremely detailed and colorful creating a beautiful world that will captivate your attention and imagination. It’s about a princess who must save her kingdom from a possible apocalyptic future. Ultimately, it creates an enjoyable experience because of its honesty and humor. There are many thought-provoking moments as well, like when Matsuko has to find ways to manage her family’s finances and the movie explores different aspects of Japanese culture, how different cultures interact with each other to create harmony. It emphasizes the importance of communication and compassion. The personalities of the characters are diverse and the movie explores how different dynamics can lead to the most heartwarming situations. Viewers feel that the movie is relatable because of it’s portrayal of mundane family life but it doesn’t have much complexity and is too specific to its culture to where it’s not as accessible as other SG movies. The biggest critique is that the animation style is outdated and doesn’t compare to the animation of Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro. However, it has been praised for its whimsical characters and perspective on family dynamics. My Neighbors the Yamadas is considered a film that broke Studio Ghibli. However, some felt as though the movie lacked tension and was slow paced with a melodramatic ending, but overall is considered a success. Tales from Earthsea was an adaptation from a complex book series by Ursula K. The characters have limited development throughout the movie, they’re almost like characters in stock images because they have no memorable traits or personalities. The characters are two-dimensional and lack depth to where it’s hard to get invested in the plot. Alone, it’s a fairly decent movie but in comparison to others it doesn’t meet typical SG standards. This movie has been coined a “Goro dud” because it was simplistic and uncompelling, when Studio Ghibli is known for enticing content that contain themes of loss, love, and magic. Overall, the film suffers because it doesn’t provide the heartwarming and fantastic feeling audiences expect from Studio Ghibli. The relationships in the film are toxic and very contradictory from the typical healthy and uplifting connections in SG movies. The movie failed to provide the strong female leads that viewers expect from Studio Ghibli movies like Spirited Away or The Secret World of Arrietty. The lack of character development makes it difficult for viewers to follow Earwig’s journey and many of the other characters were viewed as unlikeable as well.
